Dalton is the largest city in the northern Georgia Piedmont and is the county seat of Whitfield County. The population was 22,114 at the 2010 census. Dalton is approximately 50 miles north of Atlanta and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area.

Dalton is best known as the home of the first airmail delivery in the United States. Dalton lies at the heart of Northern Georgia’s “Mountain Empire,” a region once visited by Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Andrew Johnson, and Woodrow Wilson.

The city was named after Confederate Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith, who commanded a division in General Robert E. Lee’s army at the Battle of Chickamauga.

Because of its location near Cheatham Hill, one of Georgia’s four main passes through the Appalachian Mountain chain, Dalton has adapted to winter conditions with remarkable success; it claims to be the coldest city in Georgia during January through March (and second-coldest in all of America).

In 2008, Dalton received national attention from many news sources for a snow emergency declaration that was lifted following only 18 hours due to exceptional snowfall (including 6 inches within an hour), but not before closing schools and businesses, disrupting rail service, impeding interstate traffic, and causing extensive property
